Petty squabbles are the most important issues in Singapore right now.

That’s the most rational and immediate conclusion one can come up with after browsing through the featured articles on Yahoo! Singapore today. Urgh, It just reminds me why I rather read from main Yahoo! site.

Believe it or not, the local news that they felt was worthy of being featured is about the alleged spat between Felicia Chin and Desmond Koh. Then, they go on about Felicia’s plastic surgery and how their little tiff is mediated. Of course, I can understand how important their little spat is and really, I need to be assured that all is well, before I can carry on with life. I feel so safe now. Thank god for Yahoo! Singapore.

Geez.

Malaysia is also really making some headlines in Yahoo!Singapore today- 3 out of 6 of the featured articles is about the country. Malaysian Courts caning couple for having sex outside wedlock, Malaysian Tourism ministry starts food war, Brawl between Malaysian princes starts royal feud. I pretty much rolled my eyes at the titles.

You know what? I would rather spend my time reading articles like singers who really can’t sing. At least I had a good time chortling at pictures of lip-synching artistses and snickering my approval at comments, which by the way, were extremely entertaining. Another article, that I enjoyed reading, tells us where the coldest place in the Solar System lies. It’s a little less entertaining, but is so much more informative and it kicks my IQ up a level.

Peace to the Asian kids.

By the way, I really love the more recent Backstreet Boys songs. Their newer songs are very much Neyo/Chris Brownish; Synthpop.

Bye Bye Love

Straight Through My Heart

Woah. Even the Backstreet Boys has conformed to the Vampire fever that has taken the the box office by storm. Everyone seems to be loving the vamppy love, for some reason. Well, I guess forbidden romance has its attraction.

22 Feburary [Does the unemployed really need compensations?]

As my family congregated in the den with their aural and visual attention perkily tuned to the news reporter, it was once again re-enforced to us as well as to the general public as it has been done everyday, that our economy is slipping out of scale. Then, the falling prices of general stocks would be promptly displayed to back up claims while the reporter continues to ramble on with mock urgency.

“Isn’t it time for us to spend more?” I regarded my mom curiously.

“NO” She said without a moment of hesitation.” We will do that once the government ensures that we get more money”

This has led me to wonder why our government has not ventured into the prospects of Unemployment Compensations. Of course, we already have some Welfare Benefits that only the most needy people can qualify due to their stringent requirements, but the idea of unemployment compensations never seem to get through. The most fundamental idea of Unemployment Compensation revolves around paying the unemployed and getting receipts from the employed; therein, spreading the wealth.

The idealistic concept of Unemployment Compensation is perfect but will definitely be mishandled if ever imposed in our home country. There will be cheers, there will be curses. But most of all, there will be a morass of questions regarding the skewed personal integrity and responsibilities.

Some argues that this form of compensation can actually elevate the economic situation as it does improves spending power of the population, i.e. those who are unemployed gets to spend money as well. When a person becomes unemployed, his ability to spend reduces and thus creates a general contraction in the economy due to the work of Money Multiplier which basically states that a general change in consumption when multiplied by the consumers propensity to save, will cause a relative change to a country’s income. So, if we do provide such people with some form of leeway, the general consumption in the country will increase and in such, the income of the country will also rise.

As valid as the idea sounds, it is also equally questionable.

By providing the Unemployment Compensations, the government is indirectly giving the latent freeloaders a chance to act. In this idealistic concept, those who does not work also gets to spend. For most part, the country would merely be supporting them at the expense of the workforce who works hard for their fair share of rewards, that of which is partially and consistently taxed and sapped by loafers who spend time allegedly ‘looking’ for work.

In the first place, why would they want to look for work when they get money either way? It is true that the amount they will receive is marginally lesser, but even then they have got this benefit to fall back on; They have a baseline to fall on in the worst scenario. This results in casual job searches, picky selections and an over dependence on the Unemployment Compensation. Not the best way for the society to function.

Also, this form of compensation would reduce the employees’ motivation and desperation to stay active and employed in such difficult times. Their worries about wealth and finances would be effaced as even if they are unemployed, this form of benefit can tide them through. This mentality entails a lower productivity and in such, increases the cost of production. Not very profitable for the company.

The amalgamation of this two results will only cause a downwards spiral for the country that could very well be avoided. On a superficial basis, this ideology is impeccable just as communism had sound. However, in practice, especially in a small country like we are in, it is in fact very much detrimental to the economy, the spine of the nation. Unless there is stringent guidelines for this concept, or that the population does respect and adhere to their personal integrity and responsibilities, it is very difficult for this grandiosely idealistic concept to survive the malicious and depraved intents of people to take advantage of this system.

Until we break free from being a society with deviated morals and where every little small gains are throughoutly harvested, Unemployment Compensation just have to be kept on hold.

12 December [Political Politics]

So far, my holidays have not been wasted on pointless rotting at home, which is great because I had expected an extreme human-fermentation. As for the last two days, there had been understudies with Marine Parade Ministers which is actually a part of my politics elective.

It was extremely eye opening and seriously, not as boring as it is going sound in the later part of the posts.

Went with 3 other people to the Meet The People session at Marine Parade on Wednesday. It was interesting to hear about their appeals for the Minister because some of the issues were kind of,I guess, thought provoking. So anyway, acted as a partial translator at one of the station booths since both of the volunteers there (Joyce and someone else) are Malays and can only understand part of Chinese.

We then went into the room where the minister was at work, interviewing the residents with regards to their appeal and signing the letters. Memories of then are all very vague now since all my attention were focused on keeping myself warm.

I think I may go back there even after my attachment ends, provided I’ll be of use.

And yesterday was the dialogue session with the grassroot leaders at Marine Parade Community Center. Made new friends with people whose names I can’t remember. Maybe except Shaun, who was interesting (and rich) and easy to remember. It seems that he’ll be going to Israeli for vacation next week… Gosh, I want to visit Istanbul, but pockets are empty.

The dialogue session started of with a talk by the MAS, about the financial crisis and how it affects Singapore. It went very in dept and far more detailed than the newspapers, so I guess it was a lesson well learned.

It was extremely interesting to see how the Senior Minister used politically correct terms to humor people and to perhaps whack others. It was annoying yet funny, when one of the key person made fun of the MAS spokesperson using a term she just taught her listeners.

I guess, in it’s like that in politics- Crude humor-sugarcoated criticisms.

09 December [The Anthem Of The Freed; The Opening Song]

Mid Term Tests are over and today officially marks the start of my freedom, albeit temporarily. Furthermore, the prelude to my liberalization  have brought along a couple of outings that everyone so needs as a breather. Catching up with friends is awesome, especially if you gain extra physical exercises which are so deprived.

Yesterday was the  39th STUDENT COUNCIL SMEXCO SENTOSA OUTING, 081208,

which was awesome by the way, even though it was raining throughout the day. So, met Weisheng, Tabitha, Hanlu and Aloysius at Bedok Train Station at 9.20am to take the EW train to Outram, after which we switched trains to go HarbourFront, where we met Cherlyn and Rachel.

We then had brunch at Subway (eat fresh) and was joined by Victor and Leonard. Then we went upstairs to take the monorail but was fairly disappointed when we saw the rain, so we decided to wait for Daryl, hoping the rain would clear up a bit, which so did not happen.

Went to Palawan Beach and played Captain’s Ball (in the rain) with the VJC volleyball Weisheng brought.

Play play play and victor hit hanlu (or the other way round) accidentally on the forehead with his elbow.

Major Contusion wound.

We then went to Siloso Beach for varied reasons (which I can’t remember) and found an awesome white tent where we dumped our stuffs and played circle volleyball (everyone standing in a circle and playing volleyball, DOH). And it was still raining by the way. All of us are soaked and my hair was FLAT and WET. And it was fun, although we spent more time picking up the ball than actually passing it from one to another. It wasn’t easy, but I think we all got better as the time goes by.

So,  some when during the game, Nalina, Bryan , Shiya and Crystal arrived and we continued our Volleyball Bonanza before switching to Captain’s Ball (again) but this time, we had no chairs to stand on. I think I was pretty noisy because Victor (again) keep hitting my face when he throw the ball, haha.

Switched back to Volleyball, but this time in the Line version (6 on each side) before they switched to Beach soccer which I have no idea what it is about because they keep yelling facetiously at Crystal to touch the ball before it rolls into the goal, which was depicted by a small rectangle they drew at the end of each court.

Bathed, took more pictures went home since I had family dinner ( which was so boring I zoned out for 3hours.)

>>>MORE PHOTOS IN MYPHOTOGALLERY.

I can’t wait till 20th December, i.e. 39th SMEXCO Christmas Gathering

P.S. This has to be the most vigourous activity I had since 2 month ago.

5 November

And so, the most expensive, most extensive and probably most watched campaign had finally come to closure this afternoon (at GMT +8) , or in the previous evening in US (They’re probably rousing for Wednesday breakfast now).

No surprises Obama won, but I was expecting a wider margin between the candidates. I guess the Republicans did a great job playing the Fear Card, inciting fear and smearing Obama’s campaign with caustic defamatory accusations of Obama’s relationship with terrorists, in Palin’s words ” Palling around the terrorists”.

I’m sure the Republicans will be sued bankrupt if they were campaigning against ‘we-know-who’ in Singapore.

I’m glad Obama won. The Republicans had obviously stoop low, by digging and playing up Obama’s life story. I don’t think it is fair for them to brand him ‘terrorist-friendly’ just because his has a Muslim ancestry, him being a Christian and all.

One thing we can’t deny, is that Obama is indeed a very smooth talker with minimal administrative experience in the governing sector. We will have to wait to find out if he is all talk, or if he is more than words. Either way, I’m sure everyone agrees that he will definitely be a better president than one Sarah Palin can ever hope to be.

That bitch.

She had it in her to say that she would be a better governor than Obama because she had been the mayor of Wasilla till 2002, which by the way, has only population 5000+. It is definitely ironic that the media in her hometown endorses Obama as president. By the way, she had never been out of Alaska before the election began and naively believed that her hometown Alaska’s proximity to Russia is her foreign policy experience credential. I mean, how silly can that get?

It’s like saying, ” I know how to talk to birds because I can see birds flying from my window”.

I have nothing against the Republicans, just Sarah Palin. I’m sure Mccain would have won if he had chosen a better partner. Sarah is totally inept as a vice president.

Well, I guess that’s that. Obama is the president for this term and perhaps the next term as well. 8 years tops and he will be out of the white house like Bush. That is, if there is still an 8 years late. I hope Obama won’t screw the world up with WWIII.

24 September

It’s not surprising to find that Sarah Palin is now (or has been) the ” fevered foe” of the “modern single urban childless American feminists”. And the cause of the hatred she is garnering comes from the haters’ source of jealousy- herself.

I quote from Roissy

But Sarah Palin’s worst enemy is not the mincing liberal betaboy, oh no. It’s the childless, career-tracked, urban slut machine, government-as-daddy-and-husband-substitute, spinsterette. Palin shits grizzly-sized dung all over that lifestyle with her outdoorsiness, large brood, and prole tastes. The thing about her they really can’t swallow are her FIVE kids. There’s no better way to remind a hip clubgoing single chick in the city who loves to travel and sip pinot noir of her impending infertility and genetic obsolescence than with the image of a woman who’s chosen not to ignore her biological impimperative in favor of playing the field indefinitely.

Palin makes blue state SWPLs nervous because she is the chill up their spines that they are being outbred into insignificance.

Her lifestyle contradict the ones of modern feminists who prefer to be in the playing field, and to validate their capabilities. But poor poor them, when the happy mother of FIVE kids, also a previous pageant winner, appeared from nowhere and slips snugly into a position they can only masturbate to. Of course they’ll hate Sarah Palin. She who beats them in their career&social status, beauty&poise and has a svelte figure after FIVE CHILDREN!? She, who dish as a perfect example that mothers can too be successful in the money-based society.

When you have your own children to raise, the sight of a mother on stage at a political convention won’t fry your neural network with murderous impulses. This kind of acute self-absorption naturally places great emphasis on fighting those whose lifestyle choices mock your own.

19th August

Today’s topic is about why we should be allowed to style our hair in school…

Hair Styling is generally known as the action of maneuvering one’s hair such that it falls into a certain position in a certain way that fits one’s liking…

It is art, I would suggest, due to the nature of versatility. Different perception of the art would also give the art a unique personality, of such one often neglect or fail to detect. Art, if you realize, does contain traces of emotion.yes, the emotion of artist is one, but the art itself belies traces of humanity, trace of humanity that is often seen superficially. The Mona Lisa smile; it portrays elegance, maybe serenity. However, upon closer look, we detect certain traces of unease. The pupils, glancing towards the left, evokes insecurity..

Art, is a sign of civilization and it could at the same time, educate the population on perceiving and identifying personal perceptions. It also nurtures a creative mind, promotes the ability to detect underlying emotions and also the artistic culture. So why is hairstyling, a form of art, not allowed in school? School is a place whereby lecturers or people of repute gather to nurture the next generation on the correct morals as well as equipping them with skills., but why is an important form of art neglected, or rather, ostracized? Not only should hairstyling be allowed in school, it should be up as for taking as an elective. It allows the student to not only have a first hand experience of sheer art, it also provides them with a platform to express their creativity and stand through their masterpieces.

By not allowing hairstyling in school, there is a major flaw in the educational system (not pinpointing in any organization in particular), because there is now a restriction in the creativity and also suppression of expression of the youths. This may result in depression, due to the lack of chance to express, or even the lost of a talent of this form. Hence, to promote an innovative, initiative and all rounded generation, hair styling should be included in school.
Another major flaw with the population is the misconception of hairstyling. It is stereotyped as the imminent and extensive use of styling tools, and as a waste of time. Firstly, you CAN style your hair without any wax or products that allow the hair to stay in place.  So, are schools really banning the use of wax, or hairstyling in general?

Not only is hairstyling a form of art, it is an embellishment. Wouldn’t it be dull if the world is full of people with the same hairstyle? That is why the hairstylists demand for a break though. They want to beautify our boring and political society with their art. Not only does it brings about versatility and indirectly diversify our society, it is also a form of respect. As i have mentioned earlier, hairstyling would diversify and beautify the society. It shows that the society took effort to please any visitors by providing them with diversified art for their sight. It would be truly offending if there is no form of embellishment in a place you are visiting. It shows that the organization belittles you. That is why, hairstylist unselfishly took the partial responsibility of pleasing the visitors. This applies to school as well. It is not enough, that the buildings are decorated. the students, living beings should be allowed to make themselves presentable and unique such that the school has its very own school culture.

School culture is very important in the school and the school sees its importance, but they lost sight of the crux. The creativity and unique personalities of the student IS the crux, and some people, the hairstylist , chooses to express themselves via their hair.

Therefore for the culture, for respect, hairstyling should be allowed..
